With the MGNREGA workers laying a siege to the Bharat Nagar chowk today, the entire traffic on this route came to a standstill for an hour. Residents faced inconvenience as they had to take alternative routes to reach their respective destinations.
The protest was held by the MGNREGA Employees Union, Ludhiana, to press for their demands pending for a long time. Commuters going towards bus stand, the Bharat Nagar chowk, Fountain chowk and Ferozepur road were a harried lot.
President of the union Sandeep said they had been holding such protests for the past eight years to seek regularisation of their jobs but the state government was not ready to pay heed to their demands. ”Tomorrow, a Cabinet meeting of the state government will be held. If the government does not make announcement for regularisation of our jobs, we will intensify our protest in the coming days,” he added.
