Lok Sabha Elections 2019 saw BJP sweeping away majority of the country, colouring it in saffron. Congress faced a shameful defeat gathering less than 55 seats of the 543 Lok Sabha seats. In addition to the countrywide humiliation of the Indian National Congress second time in a row, the party’s president Rahul Gandhi had another major blow to tackle with.
The Congress President contested from two Wayanad in Kerala and Amethi in Uttar Pradesh. While he won from Wayanad, Amethi came as a loss. Smriti Irani who gave the leader a tough competition in 2014 Lok Sabha elections bounced back gaining victory over the legendary Amethi with 60,000 votes. Rahul Gandhi is the first person from the Nehru-Gandhi family to lose in Amethi. The constituency had shown immense trust in the Gandhi family since decades, however, Smriti Irani with her campaigning and leadership snatched away the seat. Comparing 2009 and 2014 Lok Sabha Elections, Gandhi’s victory margin was reduced from 370,000 to 108,000 and vote share went down from 71.8% to 46.7%.
Immediately after the win seemed imminent, Smriti Irani posted a tweet saying, ‘Kaun kahta hai aasman me surakh nahi ho sakta’.
